Genres of Communication

Whether you're composing an English paper, an Instagram video, or a PowerPoint presentation, there are "rules."  Your audience expects your work to look a certain way.  For example, you need quotes and citations in that research paper, but your online followers will scroll away if they see that academic s*** in your latest reel.

• Genres are the categories of communication.  Essays, novels, status updates, movies, and ads are all examples of genres — and there are many, many more genres out there to choose from!

• Conventions are the "rules" of a genre.  Some genre expect specific language, while others might include music or images.
