I have three composition courses that I teach at Heartland Community College, and a big part of this website is developing a new textbook that I can use for all three courses. It's a big plan, and it will take me time. But here's an introduction of the materials to come.
These are policies that I use across my courses, albeit with slight differences in the grading. You'll notice my emphasis on students writing their own work, and the systems I've put in place to prevent the submission of AI.
Students who need additional support in English 101 will be concurrently enrolled in English 099. The focus of the course is five learning journals that allow students to reflect on their development as writers.
The focus for English 101 is learning the fundamentals of reading, research, and composition. I'm currently revamping this course to better address the issues I'm seeing with student confidence and the number of cases of AI that I've been seeing. The vast majority of my students work really hard to become better writers, but I want to ensure that every student who takes my course comes away feeling ready to attempt writing for any situation — even the hard ones.
English 102 focuses more heavily and research and multimodality. I plan on revamping this course for future semesters, and I'll upload my current lesson plans at some point in the future.
